Game Devs Migrating Toward iPhone, Away From WiiDate: Sun, 7. February 2010 15:06:21
A new report by Game Developer Research reveals that the number of developers working on games for the iPhone continues to rise, roughly doubling in number from last year. At the same time, the amount of work done on games for Nintendo's Wii dropped significantly:
"Just over 70 percent of developers said they were developing at least one game for PC or Mac (including browser and social games), rising slightly from last year; 41 percent reported working on console games. Within that latter group, Xbox 360 was the most popular system with 69 percent of console developers targeting it, followed by 61 percent for PlayStation 3. While those console figures stayed within a few percent of last year's results, the change in Wii adoption was much more significant: reported developer support for the system dropped from 42 percent to 30 percent of console developers, supporting numerous publishers' claims of a recent softening of the Wii market."pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/02/06/1735237/Game-Devs-Migrating-Toward-iPhone-Away-From-Wii?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=10/02/06/1735237"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/02/06/1735237/Game-Devs-Migrating-Toward-iPhone-Away-From-Wii?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p

Gi0 writes "After a couple of months of rejection, the C64 Emulator has finally been approved for the iPhone (and is available at the app store now). 'BASIC has been removed for this release; however, we hope that working with Apple further will allow us to re-enable it. Despite its absence, BASIC is not our focus; ultimately, fans of the C64 want games.' It comes with 5 bundled games and will certainly give you that retro fix for your iPhone."pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/09/07/1556224/C64-Emulator-Finally-Approved-For-iPhone?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/09/07/1556224"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/09/07/1556224/C64-Emulator-Finally-Approved-For-iPhone?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p

Sony Joins the Offensive Against Pre-Owned GamesDate: Fri, 19. February 2010 15:05:39
BanjoTed writes "In a move to counter sales of pre-owned games, EA recently revealed DLC perks for those who buy new copies of Mass Effect 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Now, PlayStation platform holder Sony has jumped on the bandwagon with similar plans for the PSP's SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3. '[Players] will need to register their game online before they are able to access the multiplayer component of the title. UMD copies will use a redeemable code while the digital version will authenticate automatically in the background. Furthermore ... anyone buying a pre-owned copy of the game will be forced to cough up $20 to obtain a code to play online."pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/02/19/0715259/Sony-Joins-the-Offensive-Against-Pre-Owned-Games?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=10/02/19/0715259"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/02/19/0715259/Sony-Joins-the-Offensive-Against-Pre-Owned-Games?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p

On Transitioning To an Asian-Style MMO, Such As emAion/emDate: Fri, 14. August 2009 15:05:03
A. Harvey writes "Ten Ton Hammer has an interesting article about the transition to Asian-style MMO games, specifically Aion. 'In many ways, the West is catching up to the East in terms of gaming. Per capita gaming ... and broadband proliferation is markedly higher in Asian markets. Gaming is much more social in the East as well; many players gather together in internet cafes to spend their game time with each other. Another surprising difference in most Asian-based games is that most functions of game control are mouse based.' I think the author hit the nail on the head that Aion will be a big success in North America and will introduce a lot of players to games with an Eastern feel."pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/08/14/0226201/On-Transitioning-To-an-Asian-Style-MMO-Such-As-emAionem?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/08/14/0226201"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/08/14/0226201/On-Transitioning-To-an-Asian-Style-MMO-Such-As-emAionem?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p
