SD Adapter For Dreamcast ReleasedDate: Fri, 22. October 2010 02:42:50
YokimaSun writes "The Dreamcast was the last console by Sega that had innovations that today's consoles have taken on board, i.e. broadband online gaming and innovative gaming controllers (such as the fishing controller). The console still lives on today, thanks to the support of the homebrew community that still churns out games and emulators and also the odd commercial release for the console by independent developers. Today the spark has been ignited by the fascinating release of an SD adapter for the Dreamcast that allows homebrew games to be played without the need to burn to disc. It's time to dust off those Dreamcast consoles and get back into free gaming. The same company have also released a Dreamcast modified with VGA support and a front-loading SD slot and its own BIOS. Awesome to relive some of those Dreamcast classics." Read more of this story at Slashdot.
New Service Aims To Replace Consoles With Cloud GamingDate: Tue, 24. March 2009 15:05:16
ThinSkin writes "Imagine playing bleeding-edge games, yet never again upgrading your hardware. That's the ambitious goal of OnLive's Internet delivered gaming service. Using cloud computing, OnLive's goal is to 'make all modern games playable on any system,' thanks in large part to OnLive's remote servers that do all the heavy lifting. With a fast enough Internet connection, gamers can effectively stream and play games using a PC, Mac, or a 'MicroConsole,' 'a dedicated gaming client provided by OnLive that includes a game controller.' Without ever having to worry about costly hardware upgrades or the cost of a next-gen console, gamers can expect to fork over about $50 yearly just for the service. If this thing takes off, this can spell trouble for gaming consoles down the road, especially if already-established services like Steam and Impulse join the fray."pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/03/24/135212amp;from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/03/24/135212"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/03/24/135212amp;from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p

iPhone Gaming Developers Squeezed by Big Names (NewsFactor)Date: Wed, 15. July 2009 20:33:46
NewsFactor - In a packed gaming market, iPhone developers big and small are competing for iPhone owners' attention. Gaming applications are a huge draw, but their popularity is putting pressure on independent developers, who are competing with big-name publishers like Electronic Arts and newly venture-backed and angel-funded gaming houses such as Ngmoco and Tapulous.
Nintendo and the Decline of Hardcore GamingDate: Fri, 24. April 2009 15:04:57
angry tapir writes "Chris Jager from GoodGearGuide argues that the rise of casual gaming means near-certain death for hardcore gaming. The sales of casual 'party-friendly' games are massively outstripping the sales of classic hardcore games, and the makers of other consoles are taking note of Nintendo's success in attracting non-traditional gamers to the Wii and DS. There is evidence that Sony and Microsoft are both trying to tap into the casual market, and it's only a matter of time before hardcore gaming goes the way of the Nintendo PowerGlove." Of course, the trend toward casual doesn't just involve Nintendo mdash; World of Warcraft's success (and the huge effect it's had on the MMO genre) is often credited to its focus on casual gamers. While it's not unreasonable for game studios to want all players to see all of the game's content, perhaps there's a better way of catering to the more hardcore players than tacking on difficulty modes and "do it the hard way" achievements.pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/04/24/0524216amp;from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/04/24/0524216"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/04/24/0524216amp;from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p

Games: Sony Confirms PSPGo Gone; New Consoles Expected 2014Date: Fri, 22. April 2011 08:04:26
itwbennett writes "Sony on Wednesday confirmed rumors that it is ending production of the PSPGo, the 'slider' version of their handheld gaming system that was introduced back in 2009. Meanwhile, Kotaku posted an article saying that Microsoft and Sony probably won't be launching their next generation consoles until 2014. Whether the Kotaku prognostications are true or not, 'it's fun to think about what a console will have inside it in 3 years,' writes blogger Peter Smith. 'Will it support physical media? Probably. That seems too early for a pure digital delivery system. But I bet they'll have either terabyte hard drives or some kind of cloud storage for digital media.'"
