US Air Force Buying Another 2,200 PS3s

Date: Wed, 25. November 2009 15:05:06
bleedingpegasus sends word that the US Air Force will be grabbing up 2,200 new PlayStation 3 consoles for research into supercomputing. They already have a cluster made from 336 of the old-style (non-Slim) consoles, which they've used for a variety of purposes, including "processing multiple radar images into higher resolution composite images (known as synthetic aperture radar image formation), high-def video processing, and 'neuromorphic computing.'" According to the Justification Review Document (DOC), "Once the hardware configuration is implemented, software code will be developed in-house for cluster implementation utilizing a Linux-based operating software."pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/11/25/0527205/US-Air-Force-Buying-Another-2200-PS3s?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/11/25/0527205"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/11/25/0527205/US-Air-Force-Buying-Another-2200-PS3s?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/lpEZMgu4Ea6-_LXrBbwzVwVUPwA/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/lpEZMgu4Ea6-_LXrBbwzVwVUPwA/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/lpEZMgu4Ea6-_LXrBbwzVwVUPwA/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/lpEZMgu4Ea6-_LXrBbwzVwVUPwA/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/-40wD-BsMFY" height="1" width="1"/

Cyber-criminals Targeting Online Gaming Websites

Date: Tue, 12. October 2010 20:21:06
adeelarshad82 writes "According to a June 2010 Nielsen NetView survey on Internet usage, online gaming has overtaken e-mail in terms of the total percentage of time Americans spend online. Only social networking scores higher. On average, online gaming now consumes a staggering 407 million hours of U.S. citizens' time per year. Unfortunately, Nielsen's not the only one that noticed this trend; cybercriminals have taken note as well and are taking advantage of this by infecting games sites—from legitimate forums and tutorial sites to shadier download sites—to attack the unwary. Fortunately though, Avast has published a list of worst gaming sites." Read more of this story at Slashdot.

UK ISP To Prioritize Gaming Traffic

Date: Sat, 21. August 2010 22:46:11
nk497 writes "A UK ISP is now offering a broadband package just for gamers, which will prioritize their traffic to give them an edge over rival players. Demon Internet has also set up direct networks with gaming companies to boost speeds, and is promising lower latency and a higher usage cap than standard packages. 'Looking at the usage of gamers, it's actually more akin to a small business,' the company said. While paying to get specific content streamed more quickly may worry net neutrality campaigners, Demon says it has enough capacity for its own customers and that's who it's looking out for."pa href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F10%2F08%2F21%2F2114220%2FUK-ISP-To-Prioritize-Gaming-Traffic" target="_blank" title="Share on Facebook"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"/a a href="http://twitter.com/home?status=UK+ISP+To+Prioritize+Gaming+Traffic%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FcZrJBx" target="_blank" title="Share on Twitter"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/08/21/2114220/UK-ISP-To-Prioritize-Gaming-Traffic?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./piframe src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?op=discussamp;id=1762072amp;smallembed=1" style="height: 300px; width: 100%; border: none;"/iframeimg width='1' height='1' src='http://slashdot.feedsportal.com/c/32909/f/530758/s/cff847d/mf.gif' border='0'/ pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/CwXRNk0V9koAwF8w_uN9hIdglt0/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/CwXRNk0V9koAwF8w_uN9hIdglt0/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/CwXRNk0V9koAwF8w_uN9hIdglt0/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/CwXRNk0V9koAwF8w_uN9hIdglt0/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/WHqWQh-wKmY" height="1" width="1"/

Free Games As a Solution To Game Piracy

Date: Fri, 11. July 2008 03:04:52
christ, jesus H writes "PC gaming may not be dying, but it is in a state of flux. We're seeing developers and publishers blaming piracy for all the ills of PC gaming, but attempts to rein in pirates with the help of DRM only annoys and mobilizes the legitimate customers of your games. The solution? According to David Perry of Shiny Games, PC games are going to be free." (And if anyone has a favorite replacement term for "piracy," in the context of electronic copyright violation, please suggest it below.)Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Game Devs On the Future of PC Gaming

Date: Tue, 6. April 2010 15:05:14
Shacknews wraps up a developer panel at PAX East discussing the future of gaming on the PC. They cover topics including DRM, digital download platforms and cloud-based gaming services. "Joe Kreiner of Terminal Reality: 'If you look at it from a giant publisher perspective, then the numbers on the PC just really don't make financial sense for you to bother with it. But if you start out with the mindset mdash; you know, you're targeting that group, you make a niched product that's going [to] do well, if you look at a lot of the titles on Steam, Torchlight's a really good example mdash; as long as you know that's your audience to begin with, and you make something inside of a budget that you know you're going to be selling those kinds of numbers, you can be very successful. I think it just takes a targeted developer. ... There is no [PC] platform, really. It's just a mish-mosh of hardware, an operating system that kind of supports games. The problem with that platform is, there's no standards and piracy is rampant, so why would we want to make a video game for that platform unless you had some sort of draconian DRM thing to keep it from being stolen?"pa href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F10%2F04%2F06%2F0613228%2FGame-Devs-On-the-Future-of-PC-Gaming" target="_blank" title="Share on Facebook"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"/a a href="http://twitter.com/home?status=Game+Devs+On+the+Future+of+PC+Gaming%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F97fHAC" target="_blank" title="Share on Twitter"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/04/06/0613228/Game-Devs-On-the-Future-of-PC-Gaming?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./piframe src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?op=discussamp;id=1608506amp;smallembed=1" style="height: 300px; width: 100%; border: none;"/iframe pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/RboqReRdV4oWkqYUd_I9Q59wL1U/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/RboqReRdV4oWkqYUd_I9Q59wL1U/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/RboqReRdV4oWkqYUd_I9Q59wL1U/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/RboqReRdV4oWkqYUd_I9Q59wL1U/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/U56oCenJzrc" height="1" width="1"/

Cheaper Car Insurance For Gamers

I know your first reaction is that this story is gonna be an ad, but SpuriousLogic's story is actually about insurers considering giving a discount to elderly gamers. The question is: does gaming improve mental agility and make you a safer driver? And if so, I'll have to add gaming to mowing the lawn for my weekly chores.Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Cross-Platform Mobile Gaming Gaining Traction

Date: Thu, 4. March 2010 03:33:26
andylim writes "Several mobile gaming companies are developing cross-platform multiplayer games allowing Android and iPhone users, for example, to play games against each other. Last month touchArcade reported on a cross-platform baseball game developed by Com2Us called Homerun Battle 3D. Unlike turn-based multiplayer mobile games, Homerun Battle 3D allows players to compete against each other instantly, but you don't see the other player mdash; instead you only get to see your competitor's score being updated. Pushing cross-platform multiplayer games even further, a company called Bulky Pix has created a table-football-style game that displays the action as it happens mdash; both players see the ball moving around. This hopefully suggests that cross-platform, multiplayer mobile shooters aren't far behind."pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/03/03/1635250/Cross-Platform-Mobile-Gaming-Gaining-Traction?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=10/03/03/1635250"/aa href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F10%2F03%2F03%2F1635250%2FCross-Platform-Mobile-Gaming-Gaining-Traction" target="_blank" title="Share on Facebook"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"/a a href="http://twitter.com/home?status=Cross-Platform+Mobile+Gaming+Gaining+Traction%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2Fa1pX4e" target="_blank" title="Share on Twitter"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/03/03/1635250/Cross-Platform-Mobile-Gaming-Gaining-Traction?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/byAV6edQkDL0731aJO01pr02x0Q/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/byAV6edQkDL0731aJO01pr02x0Q/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/byAV6edQkDL0731aJO01pr02x0Q/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/byAV6edQkDL0731aJO01pr02x0Q/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/UYZ5Zb0ooek" height="1" width="1"/
