Evolutionary Scientists Test-Drive emSpore/em, Gripe

Date: Fri, 24. October 2008 15:04:57
ahab_2001 writes "The computer game Spore has been marketed partly as an experience that makes evolutionary biology come alive in a game setting. But does that claim hold water? To find out, John Bohannon, a correspondent for Science Magazine (writing as 'The Gonzo Scientist'), sat four card-carrying scientists, ranging from evolutionary biologist Niles Eldredge to JPL astrophysicist Miles Smith, down in front of a terminal to play the game. The upshot, says Bohannon: Spore flunks basic science, getting 'most of biology badly, needlessly, and often bizarrely wrong.'"pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/10/23/217208amp;from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=08/10/23/217208"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/10/23/217208amp;from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~a/BOBa8w3GZHEqM9njncjA85Y-Brc/a"img src="http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~a/BOBa8w3GZHEqM9njncjA85Y-Brc/i" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/alAcjo9TOcU" height="1" width="1"/

Build an $800 Gaming PC

Date: Wed, 27. May 2009 15:04:57
ThinSkin writes "Building a computer that can handle today's games doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. In fact, you can build one for less than $800, especially given that many hardware manufacturers have cut costs considerably. Loyd Case over at ExtremeTech shows gamers how to build an $800 gaming PC, one that features an overclockable Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 and a graphics-crunching EVGA 260 GTX Core 216. The computer exceeded expectations in gaming and synthetic tests, and was even overclocked well over spec at 3.01GHz."pa href="http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/05/26/2325208amp;from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/05/26/2325208"/a/ppa href="http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/05/26/2325208amp;from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/1RDhyVQnNvSanSvXuXRslTQfvSI/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/1RDhyVQnNvSanSvXuXRslTQfvSI/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/1RDhyVQnNvSanSvXuXRslTQfvSI/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/1RDhyVQnNvSanSvXuXRslTQfvSI/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds2.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/pYkUKDwDnj8" height="1" width="1"/

Video Games Linked To Child Aggression

Date: Tue, 4. November 2008 03:05:24
the4thdimension writes "CNN is running a story this morning that explains new research showing a correlation between video games and aggression in children. The study monitored groups of US and Japanese children, asking them to rate their violent behavior over a period of several months while they played video games in their free time. The study concludes that it has "pretty good evidence" that there is a link between video games and childhood aggression." Review: emGears of War 2/em

Date: Fri, 14. November 2008 03:05:37
The original Gears of War was one of the most popular games of 2006, helping to solidify the Xbox 360's place in the console market. Since then, it's sold about 5 million copies. When word leaked out that a sequel was in the works, many wondered if Epic Games could reach the bar set by the first game. As it turns out, they could. Gears of War 2 will feel very familiar to those who have played its predecessor. Games often have a way of reinventing themselves as sequels come and go, but Epic stuck to the basics of what had already worked so well, and simply set about improving, polishing, and fleshing out the Gears world as much as they could. Read on for the rest of the review.pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/11/13/1541204amp;from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=08/11/13/1541204"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/11/13/1541204amp;from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~a/c13mbzoxyw0ElX16bNOVJuysx_Q/a"img src="http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~a/c13mbzoxyw0ElX16bNOVJuysx_Q/i" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/bsWGMpMx0BU" height="1" width="1"/

Valve's Battle Against Cheaters

Date: Fri, 19. February 2010 15:05:41
wjousts writes "IEEE Spectrum takes a look behind the scenes at Valve's on-going efforts to battle cheaters in online games: 'Cheating is a superserious threat,' says [Steam's lead engineer, John] Cook. 'Cheating is more of a serious threat than piracy.' The company combats this with its own Valve Anti-Cheat System, which a user consents to install in the Steam subscriber agreement. Cook says the software gets around anti-virus programs by handling all the operations that require administrator access to the user's machine. So, how important is preventing cheating? How much privacy are you willing to sacrifice in the interests of a level playing field? 'Valve also looks for changes within the player's computer processor's memory, which might indicate that cheat code is running.'"pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/02/19/078220/Valves-Battle-Against-Cheaters?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=10/02/19/078220"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/02/19/078220/Valves-Battle-Against-Cheaters?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/GJuacOHeEOeYcKMdo4019RzYazM/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/GJuacOHeEOeYcKMdo4019RzYazM/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/GJuacOHeEOeYcKMdo4019RzYazM/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/GJuacOHeEOeYcKMdo4019RzYazM/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/Kwr-5hqh1hw" height="1" width="1"/

Date: Wed, 27. January 2010 15:04:52
When Apple introduced the iPhone, it shook up the cell phone business but it also changed the way people play video games. About a quarter of the 100,000 applications that you can download to the iPhone are games, ranging from the simple "Doodle Jump" to a version of "Grand Theft Auto."
