Could playing computer games enhance mental agility enough to turn people over 50 into better drivers? Allstate Corp. wants to find out, and if the answer is yes, it might offer insurance discounts to people who play the games. Under a new pilot program called InSight, Allstate will offer specialized computer games to 100,000 customers in Pennsylvania aged 50 to 75. The games' developer, San Francisco-based Posit Science, will track the total number of hours these drivers play.

With more females playing games online, the typical stereotype of an average online gamer being an introverted, overweight teenage boy who spends most of their time indoors playing computer or console games, has been blown out of the water. According to a new survey conducted online in October 2011 by Harris Interactive on behalf of GameHouse among over 2,000 U.S. adults, more than half (55%) of online gamers (people who play online games on their computer, social networking sites, or mobile devices) are women. Furthermore, these women are more social and were found to have more sex than females who do not play online games.

Currently in the lead are Rybka 3.0, recognized as the world's strongest chess engine and Hiarcs, another commercial engine. Another curiosity is a Java ME based engine running on a Nokia phone, which BTW is currently being trounced by the other engines. Do you know the name of the first computer game? I confess I didn't and I learned programming on a Univac 1100/62 so I am a lot closer to the origination date of computer games than most people who will read this.

GAMES I am all for wooden toys and board games: I spent more than an hour stocking up on them last week at the Toy Box in Hanover, so we'll have a way to pass those rainy days on the Cape. But I am also a sucker for anything battery-operated or computer-chipped.
