Console Makers Worry Over Apple's Growing Competition

Date: Mon, 28. September 2009 03:07:06
The NY Times is running a story about the effect Apple is having on the console gaming market, making Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo worry that consumers will be satisfied playing games on devices that aren't necessarily focused on gaming. Quoting: "The concerns highlight an accelerating shift away from hard-core games, which have traditionally driven console sales, to more casual ones played on cellphones. Of the 758 new game titles shown at the Tokyo Game Show, 168 were for cellphone platforms mdash; more than twice as many as in the previous year. ... Apple's assault could even eat into sales of home consoles like Nintendo's Wii, Sony's PlayStation 3 or Microsoft's XBox, as game-playing quickly becomes centered on cellphones. Many in the industry say that Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft need to explore more radical changes to their businesses, including an emphasis on software rather than hardware and a better way for users to download games. 'As a platform, the cellphone has the biggest potential, because everybody owns one,' said Kazumi Kitaue, chief executive at another game maker, Konami Digital Entertainment. A family with three children might buy just one Wii or PlayStation to share, but those children will probably have cellphones of their own and download and play games, Mr. Kitaue said."pa href="http://apple.slashdot.org/story/09/09/27/0126230/Console-Makers-Worry-Over-Apples-Growing-Competition?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/09/27/0126230"/a/ppa href="http://apple.slashdot.org/story/09/09/27/0126230/Console-Makers-Worry-Over-Apples-Growing-Competition?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/K2rrzkdFmcdTg9QDYsp72EZc458/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/K2rrzkdFmcdTg9QDYsp72EZc458/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/K2rrzkdFmcdTg9QDYsp72EZc458/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/K2rrzkdFmcdTg9QDYsp72EZc458/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/bGpsm5uhdPY" height="1" width="1"/

Why Has No One Made a Great Gaming Phone?

Date: Tue, 2. February 2010 15:06:07
andylim writes "According to Engadget, John Koller, Sony's head of PlayStation marketing, recently said that 'Apple's entrance into the portable gaming space has been a net positive for Sony. When people want a deeper, richer console, they start playing on a PSP.' What's odd though is that everyone knows that the mobile phone gaming market is a huge and yet neither Sony nor Nintendo has made a gaming phone yet. Recombu.com thinks that Nokia could enter the space with PSP-like devices and it has come up with a concept phone called the Ovi Orion, which would bridge the gap between phone and console, 'If the iPhone is Wii, then Ovi Orion would be Xbox and offer Xbox Live style features. A serious gaming phone for serious gamers.'"pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/02/01/151203/Why-Has-No-One-Made-a-Great-Gaming-Phone?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=10/02/01/151203"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/02/01/151203/Why-Has-No-One-Made-a-Great-Gaming-Phone?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/lIg_ptG8bnbyNkprBlGhsuEECns/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/lIg_ptG8bnbyNkprBlGhsuEECns/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/lIg_ptG8bnbyNkprBlGhsuEECns/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/lIg_ptG8bnbyNkprBlGhsuEECns/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/7i51qNJsq_k" height="1" width="1"/

Date: Sat, 7. May 2011 14:53:15
China will see the introduction of a video game console backed by Lenovo in the second half of this year. While you might wonder why they would try to compete with the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii, none of those consoles is allowed to be sold directly in China (which, of course doesn't mean there aren't ways around that).
