The Uzebox: an Open Source Hardware Games Console

Date: Wed, 6. July 2011 08:05:04
angry tapir writes "Lots of people are familiar with open source software. Open source hardware, however, is still more of niche category. The Uzebox is an open source, 'retro minimalist' 8-bit games console, licensed under version 3.0 of the GNU GPL. 'The console uses an overclocked ATmega644 microcontroller and classic Super Nintendo controllers, supports 256 colors and 4 sound channels and has an SD card interface from which games can be loaded from.'" Nintendo's Wii successor to dominate E3 expo

Almost six years ago at the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo, Nintendo unveiled what would eventually become known as the Wii. But the Japanese gaming giant didn't show off the new console's distinctive motion-sensing capabilities until later that year at the Tokyo Game Show. Should Next-Gen Game Consoles Be Upgradeable?

Date: Wed, 8. February 2012 08:05:08
MojoKid writes "Historically, console add-ons that boosted the performance of the primary unit haven't done well. Any attempt to upgrade a system's core performance risks bifurcating the user base and increases work developers must do to ensure that a game runs smoothly on both original and upgraded systems. The other reason is that a number of games rely on very specific hardware characteristics to ensure proper operation. In a PC, swapping a CPU with 256K of L2 for a chip with 512K of L2 is a non-issue assuming proper platform support. Existing software will automatically take advantage of the additional cache. The Xbox 360, on the other hand, allows programmers to lock specific cache blocks and use them for storing data from particular threads. In that case, expanding the amount of L2 cache risks breaking previous games because it changes the range of available cache addresses. The other side of the upgrade argument is that the Xbox 360 has been upgraded more effectively than any previous console; current high-end versions ship with more than 10x the storage of the original, as well as support for HDMI and integrated WiFi. It would also forestall the decline in comparative image quality between console and PC platforms." Read more of this story at Slashdot.

When PC Ports of Console Games Go Wrong

Date: Fri, 26. February 2010 15:05:08
A post up at Gamasutra complains about the lack of effort put into the PC ports of some console games. The author picks on the unimpressively-reviewed Ninja Blade in particular: "Just as a quick guide to what we're dealing with here: when you create a new save file at the start of Ninja Blade on the PC, it warns you not to 'turn off your console.' Yes, Ninja Blade is one of those conversions: not so much converted as made to perfunctorily run on a different machine. In-game, you're asked to press A, B, X and Y in various sequences as part of Ninja Blade's extraordinary abundance of quick-time events. Whether you have an Xbox 360 pad plugged in or not, the game captions these button icons with text describing the PC equivalent controls. Only it doesn't always do that. Sometimes, you're left staring at a giant, pulsating, green letter A, and no idea what to do with it." What awful ports have you had the misfortune to experience?pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/02/26/0651237/When-PC-Ports-of-Console-Games-Go-Wrong?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=10/02/26/0651237"/aa href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F10%2F02%2F26%2F0651237%2FWhen-PC-Ports-of-Console-Games-Go-Wrong" target="_blank" title="Share on Facebook"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"/a a href="http://twitter.com/home?status=When+PC+Ports+of+Console+Games+Go+Wrong%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FannWZG" target="_blank" title="Share on Twitter"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/02/26/0651237/When-PC-Ports-of-Console-Games-Go-Wrong?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/DC1IJ2ufFphXxy0OwP5c9hug-Ug/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/DC1IJ2ufFphXxy0OwP5c9hug-Ug/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/DC1IJ2ufFphXxy0OwP5c9hug-Ug/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/DC1IJ2ufFphXxy0OwP5c9hug-Ug/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/im1FpBB6XvA" height="1" width="1"/
