Rumorville: Sony to unveil 'premium' PSN subscriptions? (Ben Patterson)

Ben Patterson - One of Sony's biggest selling points for the PlayStation 3 is the free PlayStation Network, the PS3's online hub for gaming downloads, video rentals and multiplayer gaming. Now rumor has it that Sony is poised to start charging for premium PSN subscriptions, complete with such enticements as free monthly games and streaming music.

iPhone Shakes Up the Video Game Industry

Date: Thu, 18. June 2009 03:54:19
Hugh Pickens writes "Troy Wolverton writes in the Mercury News that in less than a year, the iPhone has become a significant game platform, but its bigger impact could be to help change the way the game industry does business. 'It's got everything you need to be a game changer,' said Neil Young, co-founder and CEO of ngmoco, which develops games solely for the iPhone. With a year under its belt and an installed base of iPhone and iPod Touch owners at around forty million, the iPhone/iPod Touch platform has eclipsed next-gen console penetration numbers and started to catch up to the worldwide penetration of both Sony's (50 million) and Nintendo's (100 million) devices. Wolverton writes that not only is the iPhone one of the first widely successful gaming platforms in which games are completely digitally distributed, but on the iPhone, consumers can find more games updated more often, and at a cheaper cost per game than what they'd find on a typical dedicated game console. While an ordinary top-of-the-line game for Microsoft's Xbox 360 sells for about $60, and one for Nintendo's DS about $30, a top-of-the-line iPhone game typically sells for no more than $10. With traditional games, developers might wait a year or two between major releases; ngmoco is planning on releasing new versions of its games for the iPhone every four to five months. 'You have to think differently,' says Young. 'It's redefining what it means to be a publisher in this world.'"pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/06/17/1611259/iPhone-Shakes-Up-the-Video-Game-Industry?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/06/17/1611259"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/06/17/1611259/iPhone-Shakes-Up-the-Video-Game-Industry?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/NJ4Hct0qGSqpPw_ZMyELqo-CJpE/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/NJ4Hct0qGSqpPw_ZMyELqo-CJpE/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/NJ4Hct0qGSqpPw_ZMyELqo-CJpE/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/NJ4Hct0qGSqpPw_ZMyELqo-CJpE/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds2.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/pvR7uVhvu8k" height="1" width="1"/

Nintendo 3DS Hands-On: Does It Live Up to the Hype? (PC World)

Date: Wed, 23. February 2011 02:30:00
PC World - We've covered Nintendo's 3DS plenty these last few months, and with good reason. Nintendo's DS platform currently qualifies as the second-bestselling game console in the world, just a few million units behind Sony's PlayStation 2. That, and we're as curious as you about the glasses-free 3D experience. Will it be enough to fend off Sony's Next Generation Portable (NGP) and Apple's rapidly expanding iOS gaming platform?

Mashable - Two new PlayStation games are blurring the line between music software and video games. Sound Shapes, for the soon-to-be-released PlayStation Vita is like a Super Mario -- if all of your actions in the classic game painted its unique soundtrack. PixelJunk 4am, for PlayStation 3, uses the gesture-based Move controller to let users loop beats, warp riffs and broadcast it all online. Mashable got some hands-on time with both games at Sony's Holiday Showcase to give you the scoop on what makes them so interesting.

Are Game Consoles Ruining DLC?

Date: Mon, 17. August 2009 15:05:37
A round-table discussion at Gametopius looks into the state of downloadable content for games as it has evolved over the past several years, going from an occasional, welcome supplement to being a common marketing strategy for most of the industry, frequently causing irritation over pricing and availability. "All of the map packs so far released for the Call of Duty games have been $10 each to download on consoles through closed networks, while PC gamers could download those same packs for free off of FileShack or somewhere else. Valve's own Team Fortress 2 has received a significant amount of DLC that's been completely free on the PC. Xbox owners of the same game, however, have only received perhaps half of that content, and they have had to pay for it in $5 packs. Why is this? The idea of this kind of content delivery was scarcely heard of on consoles, so console gamers see no reason not to pay for it. But on the PC, these amounts of content are usually just considered parts of patches. Furthermore, why pay for a few extra maps and costumes when modders are making and offering new ones for free all the time?"pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/08/16/1630252/Are-Game-Consoles-Ruining-DLC?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/08/16/1630252"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/08/16/1630252/Are-Game-Consoles-Ruining-DLC?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/vEPwZ0DswQ6HDbUnUxBI9RVAunw/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/vEPwZ0DswQ6HDbUnUxBI9RVAunw/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/vEPwZ0DswQ6HDbUnUxBI9RVAunw/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/vEPwZ0DswQ6HDbUnUxBI9RVAunw/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/H4tGDwjbS2I" height="1" width="1"/

Wii Hardware Upgrade Won't Happen Soon

Date: Fri, 15. January 2010 15:05:24
As high-definition graphics become more and more entrenched in this generation of game consoles, Nintendo has had to deal with constant speculation about a new version of the Wii that would increase its capabilities. Today, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime bluntly denied that a hardware revision was imminent, saying, "We are confident the Wii home entertainment console has a very long life in front of it." He added, "In terms of what the future holds, we've gone on record to say that the next step for Nintendo in home consoles will not be to simply make it HD, but to add more and more capability, and we'll do that when we've totally tapped out all of the experiences for the existing Wii. And we're nowhere near doing that yet."pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/01/15/0738222/Wii-Hardware-Upgrade-Wont-Happen-Soon?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=10/01/15/0738222"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/01/15/0738222/Wii-Hardware-Upgrade-Wont-Happen-Soon?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/YAKd5FasAfiK1z4DpOTryN5Vp_k/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/YAKd5FasAfiK1z4DpOTryN5Vp_k/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/YAKd5FasAfiK1z4DpOTryN5Vp_k/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/YAKd5FasAfiK1z4DpOTryN5Vp_k/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/OLO1m5JN1Yw" height="1" width="1"/
